I Space
Java, In Time and Memory
by Margaret Hawkins
Claire Wolf Krantz’s 23-foot long, five-panel Painting of Indonesia, “Java in Time and Memory, is based on her travels there and her impressions of colliding cultures. The work reads as a kind of walking tour, as each panel leads the viewer deeper into an indeterminate space that is punctuated by monuments that seem to be built into the sky. Krant’s combination of photography and painting further underscores the weird collision here between East and West, present and past, objective and subjective reality.
Claire Wolf Krantz is an artist, freelance critic, and guest curator.
As an artist she works in a combination of painting and photography as well as digitally created images.
