Memories of Tomorrow & Digital Vision 2004
by Benjamin Zoltak

Now here’s something you don’t see everyday: Susan Aurinko, an artist in her own right, is also the head curator of Flatfile. She cherry-picked artists Claire Wolf Krantz and Ariene Becker to exhibit their latest digital photo art. Unbeknownst to her, the same two artists had shared a studio together 20 years ago. Chicago roots share expressive fruits.

Krantz’s newest work includes a blend of painting and photography about, as she says, “the fictions we create.” Becker creates art that “signifies issues of identification and individuation.” Expect partially altered images of specific criteria like solitude, longing, alienation, and even connection to bring it all back around again. Her work, described as “Hopper-like landscapes,” takes a look at the glue that holds people together.

Claire Wolf Krantz is an artist, freelance critic, and guest curator.
As an artist she works in a combination of painting and photography as well as digitally created images.
